Grants Awarded

At this time of enormous challenge, we at the Haas, Jr. Fund remain firmly committed to our mission and work, and will be increasing total grant payments in 2009. We believe strongly in the ability of our grantees to make positive differences for those most in need and have awarded more than $332 million in grants to a diverse group of nonprofit organizations.

Recently, some of the obstacles to creating meaningful, lasting and big social change, have grown. Like other investors large and small the Haas, Jr. Fund has experienced a sharp decline in assets.

We remain firmly committed to supporting the critical work of our grantees. The Haas, Jr. Fund will be paying out between 8 and 9 percent of its assets over the next three years, exceeding the standard 5 percent payout rate for foundations.

As we continue to monitor the financial markets and how best to respond, we want to make sure that our grantees, and our other friends in the communities we serve, understand the Fund's priorities in the midst of this economic crisis:1) to keep our grantmaking at a level that allows many organizations to continue their work to protect and advance basic rights and opportunities for all, even if this means giving at a significantly higher-than-normal payout rate; and 2) to ensure that the Fund itself can continue to play a leadership role for years to come on issues where funding from other sources can sometimes be scarce.
