Two members of the Haas, Jr. Fund staff, Henry Der and Tim Sweeney, were honored at local events for their activism and commitment to their communities.
Henry Der serves as senior program officer for the Haas, Jr. Fund’s Equality and Justice program, with a focus on race and immigrant issues. He received an outstanding local hero award from KQED and Union Bank as part of Asian Pacific Heritage Month. Henry was honored for his long-standing civil rights work before arriving at the Haas, Jr. Fund, including his leadership for 22 years as Executive Director of Chinese for Affirmative Action.
Tim Sweeney is program director for the Haas, Jr. Fund’s Equality and Justice and Nonprofit Leadership and Governance programs and serves as the program officer for Gay and Lesbian Rights. He received the James R. Harrison Award from the San Francisco AIDS Foundation at its Leadership Recognition Dinner during a program that reflected on AIDS at 25. Tim, one of three honorees that evening, was commended for his extraordinary leadership for more than two decades in the movement for gay and lesbian rights, for his work to end HIV and AIDS, and for his work on the development of the Ryan White CARE Act. Tim’s work began more than 25 years ago as Executive Director of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.
