Grantmaking

Since its inception, the Fund has made more than $300 million in grants.

Over the past five years, 2003-07, the Fund has made grants totaling $132.7 million.

Grants are made in the following program areas: Immigrant Rights; Gay & Lesbian Rights; Education; Leadership; and Community Partnerships & Initiatives.

Community Partnerships & Initiatives, which are by invitation only and at the direction of the Trustees, include:

• the Golden Gate Park Conservancy’s restoration of historic Crissy Field
• the San Francisco Chronicle’s Season of Sharing Fund, one of the Bay Area’s largest sources of one-time emergency support for individuals and families
• key projects at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art , such as the Evelyn D. Haas Exhibition Fund that enables the museum to present major shows with broad public appeal
• Team-Up for Youth, which fosters high-quality physical activity for children, addressing economic, cultural and gender barriers that keep so many off the playing field
• University of California, Berkeley’s renovation of the Walter A. Haas, Jr. Pavilion athletic facility
• the Freedom to Marry Collaborative, which brings together diverse partner organizations across the country both to educate the public and to pursue legal advances toward the right to marry
• the San Francisco Beacon Initiative, which provides after-school programs that serve kids and families in eight low-income neighborhoods
• the San Francisco Symphony’s "Keeping Score" multi-media project to develop new audiences for classical music

Supports organizations primarily in San Francisco and Alameda counties in the Bay Area. In certain fields, supports national, state or regional projects that have strong effects in the Bay Area and advance the Fund’s goals.
