The Presidio, with nearly 1,500 acres along San Francisco’s headlands and shoreline, is the heart of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Transferred from military post to the National Park Service in 1994, the Presidio has a dual mission: to achieve financial stability and to develop as a park for the entire community. In April 2007, the Fund made a lead grant totaling $15 million to the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy to help ensure that the Presidio will be a place that is used and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Building on the Haas, Jr. Fund’s support to the Crissy Field restoration in 1999, this new gift to the Presidio of San Francisco raises the Fund’s philanthropy in the Golden Gate National Parks to more than $30 million total to date, the largest cash contribution ever received for America’s national parks.

• The Haas, Jr. Fund’s gift to the Presidio focuses on community access and supports further work planned by the Conservancy and the Presidio Trust, working in partnership with the National Park Service. The Fund’s gift will help to create and restore a comprehensive 24-mile pedestrian, hiking, and bicycle trail network at the Presidio; as well as the revitalization and expansion of the Presidio’s Rob Hill Campground – the only campground in San Francisco.

• These projects will help realize the Presidio’s potential as a national park destination that brings outdoor experiences to youth, families, and underserved communities – an aspect of particular priority to the Haas, Jr. Fund.

• The Rob Hill campground will offer many more children and their families the opportunity to enjoy a camping experience in the heart of San Francisco. With the planned renovations and expanded services, the campsite could eventually serve in the neighborhood of 20,000 people each year.

• The Community Access Program (CAP) at Rob Hill, a joint project of the Trust, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and Bay Area Wilderness Training, will provide kids from low-income communities first-time camping and national park experiences.
