Immigrant Rights and Integration
Building a movement for change

Immigrants come to America seeking the same things that have attracted so many others over decades and centuries before – freedom from poverty and prejudice, a chance at a better life for themselves and their families. And yet they still face enormous obstacles to their full participation in American society.

The Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund has a long history of working to lift up the voice, leadership, and civic and political participation of immigrant communities. Building on this commitment, we’re joining with an array of partners to help create a diverse and powerful immigration movement, starting in our home state of California.

The Public Policy Institute of California estimates that one in four Californians is an immigrant. As home to 9.9 million immigrants, California must lead the way in protecting and advancing the rights of America’s newest residents and ensuring that they have equal opportunities and an equal voice.

To build a statewide movement for change, the Haas, Jr. Fund is investing in policy advocacy, strategic communications, organizing and other activities. We’re also working with grantees to educate policymakers and the public about the need for comprehensive immigration reform at the national level.

Immigrants have made essential contributions to the American economy and American culture throughout U.S. history. Working with our partners at the local, state and national levels, the Haas, Jr. Fund seeks to ensure that today’s immigrants find a society that welcomes their contributions, respects their humanity, and rewards them on an equal basis for their hard work and ideas.

Over the past five years (2005-09), the Fund has made grants totaling more than $17.7 million to support immigrant rights.
