California has gotten off to a slow and uneven start with the Common Core Standards, but higher student achievement is the goal.

The Common Core Standards emphasize deeper knowledge of concepts and require big changes in the classroom. California's transition to the new standards is off to a slow start, but as the transition continues beyond the 2014–15 school year, the hope is that the new standards  will create incentives that lead to higher student achievement.
