Freedom to Marry, in the words of Haas, Jr. Fund Program Director Matt Foreman, is “the glue that holds the national marriage equality movement together.” Launched in 2003, Freedom to Marry brings together a diverse array of partner organizations to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from the responsibilities, protections and commitment of marriage.
The Haas, Jr. Fund played an instrumental role in establishing Freedom to Marry as a unifying force for those working for marriage equality across the country. Through research, public education, advocacy and strategic communications, Freedom to Marry is building a nationwide majority for marriage equality while working to win equal marriage rights in a growing number of states.
"Through support of Freedom to Marry, as well as several other key partners, the Haas, Jr. Fund has fostered very strong working relationships between organizations," said Evan Wolfson, founder and executive director of Freedom to Marry. "They helped create an entity that enabled all partners to come together under one solid strategy. The idea was that each group—each player—would do its part, and have its moment in the spotlight. This collaboration of organizations and funders have advanced this cause to where it is today."
