The Presidio is a former military post occupying nearly 1,500 acres along San Francisco’s headlands and shoreline. The property was transferred to the National Park Service in 1994.
In 2007, the Haas, Jr. Fund made a $15 million grant to the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy to help transform the Presidio into a recreational destination for the entire Bay Area community.
With the support of the Haas, Jr. Fund, the Presidio Trust is creating a 24-mile network of new pedestrian and bicycle trails and scenic overlooks with stunning views of the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and other landmarks.
The Haas, Jr. Fund gift also is supporting the revitalization and expansion of the Presidio’s Rob Hill Campground, the only campground in the San Francisco.
The transformation of the Rob Hill Campground means that many more children and their families will be able to enjoy a camping experience in the heart of San Francisco.
Through the Community Access Program at Rob Hill, children from low-income communities in the Bay Area will have the opportunity to sleep under the stars at the Presidio and share in the enjoyment of the National Parks.
The new trails, scenic overlooks and campground will help realize the Presidio’s potential as a one-of-a-kind National Park destination that brings outdoor experiences to youth, families and underserved communities.
The Haas, Jr. Fund’s grant for this work follows its support for the restoration of San Francisco’s Crissy Field into a 100-acre urban national park.
The Fund’s philanthropy in the Golden Gate National Parks totals $30 million to date – the largest cash contribution ever received for America’s National Parks.
