“America’s Best Idea” Previewed at the White House

How national parks are America at its very best

President Obama talks about the national parks after following up a trip to Yellowstone with a viewing of Ken Burns' documentary.

“The best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst,” said writer and historian Wallace Stegner of our national parks system. Documentarian Ken Burns explores this notion in his aptly-named film “America’s Best Idea,” which the Haas, Jr. Fund supported through the largest-ever grant for a public outreach campaign to PBS. In 2009 President Barack Obama previewed the film at the White House following a trip to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Canyon with his family.
