Michael Green

Director of Finance

Michael plays an integral role in managing the Fund's financial operations and oversees risk management, staff pension plans, and benefits.

As Director of Finance, Michael manages the Fund’s accounting function and has responsibility for reporting on expenditures. He works closely with the vice president of finance and operations on reporting of investments and manages the audit process and the Fund’s tax preparation. Michael also oversees payroll and pension functions, as well as ensuring IRS compliance for the Fund’s grantees.

Michael has extensive experience in senior finance positions with U.S. and international nonprofits working for positive social change. Before joining the Fund, he worked for three years as business manager with Hesperian Health Guides, a Bay Area nonprofit publisher. He also worked for five years as finance manager with SOS Sahel, a British nonprofit working in the Sahel region of Africa. In that position, he helped manage the organization through a successful restructuring, working with Africa-based staff to set up new financial systems and provide extensive, on-site accounting training.

A native of the United Kingdom, Michael moved to the United States in 2014; he became a U.S. citizen in 2018. He lives in Richmond with his partner, Seashia Vang, whose family came to the United States as refugees from Laos in the 1970s.

Michael holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Cambridge, and a Ph.D. in environmental science from University College London. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant (the equivalent of a CPA) in 2008.
