The In-Between Nonprofit Boards

The needs and challenges of midsize nonprofit boards

This brief helps fill a major gap in our understanding of board governance by focusing on midsize nonprofits, identifying problem areas, and suggesting targeted strategies.

The Urban Institute released this 2008 study on board governance of small to mid-size nonprofits with the aim of helping those engaged with midsize nonprofits strengthen their boards. The discussion uses data on the subset of 1,862 midsize organizations in the Urban Institute National Survey of Nonprofit Governance, the first national representative study of nonprofit governance.

As Fund senior director of leadership and grantmaking Linda Wood explains in her foreword, the focus on this often overlooked cohort is critical, "as our sector continues to focus on stronger leadership as a pathway to improved performance of nonprofits."
