In 1897, Levi Strauss, immigrant founder of the Levi’s clothing company, endowed twenty-eight scholarships at UC Berkeley—and launched a tradition of charitable work that his descendents would carry on for more than a century. New Report: Innovations in Voter Outreach Boost Election Turnout in CA Counties

In 2024, San Mateo and Yolo counties launched innovative voter education programs focused on making it easier for people to know how, when, and where to vote. The report showed voter turnout exceeded expectations—especially among communities that have historically been underrepresented at the polls. The findings showed strong partnerships between county offices and local nonprofits worked hand in hand to reach voters where they are.

Expanding Access to a Bachelor’s Degree for More Students

 Michele Siqueiros, president of the Campaign for College Opportunity, and Maria Anguiano of Arizona State University (ASU), are making strides in increasing bachelor’s degree attainment for Black, Latino, and Native American students. Their work centers on innovative policies and practices to make hybrid learning an effective strategy for students, especially first-generation and low-income students.

 Welcoming three new executive directors in the immigrant rights space and talking to them about the challenges and opportunities for their organizations in this moment. These movement leaders are proactively creating a blueprint for the next decade of immigrant rights.

Standing Up Boldly for Immigrant Legal Services

 The Immigrant Defenders Law Center provides critical legal defense support, know-your-rights education, and connections to wraparound social services for more than 30,000 immigrants.

Building “Narrative Power” To Shift Policy and Opinion on Immigrants

 We are putting forward a clear, bold vision of belonging. The national narrative around immigrants is being shaped by misinformation and fear over facts—with real-world consequences. To reverse this tide, immigrants and their allies must reclaim the narrative. Haas Jr. partners are testing and shaping bold and innovative solutions for countering these trends and reaching new audiences with pro-immigrant stories and narratives.

Docuseries The Class Premieres on PBS

 Critically acclaimed docuseries "The Class" releases on PBS nationwide. Funded in part by the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, the series follows six high school seniors at Deer Valley High School in Antioch, California as they pursue their dreams of higher education during the Covid-19 crisis.
